Skincare Toxicity And Dangerous Ingredients To Avoid

Skincare Toxicity And Dangerous Ingredients To Avoid

Skincare toxicity and dangerous ingredients are just the beginning of this vicious cycle. Skincare companies are starting to market their products "clean or green skincare." But what you don't know is that it's just marketed that way not entirely true.

Did you know that the FDA does not regulate skincare? And because they don't regulate it, almost any ingredient can be added to the products formula, including some that may be dangerous to your health.

Skin is the largest organ on our body and can absorb up to 60% of whatever you put on it. You guessed it, that means any and all products including face washes, lotions, SPF, makeup, and more. However, a lot of ingredients found in all skincare products are now linked to allergies, eczema, cancer, hormone imbalances, and reproductive problems in women and men.

So what do you do? Start by looking at all your skincare products and get cleaning! Look for these ingredients as you go through your beloved stash. If you see them, toss them. Have a little memorial service for them if you have to, but just know you are doing yourself a huge favor.

Skincare Toxicity And Dangerous Ingredients To Avoid

1. ALUMINUM

Toxic metal that can have oestrogen-like effects in our systems which disrupt the healthy functioning of the endocrine system. Heavily used in antiperspirant deodorants.

2. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine)

Clear, colorless, liquids with ammonia-like odors. Found in eye makeup , perfumes, hair products, and sunscreens.

3. DMDM HYDANTOIN & UREA (Imidazolidinyl)

Preservatives that often release formaldehyde which may cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches, and loss of sleep. Found in skincare products, cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners, and detergents.

4. MINERAL OIL

Mineral oil is made from processed petroleum that coats the skin like plastic, clogging its pores. This is incredibly harmful because it interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, therefore increasing likelihood of acne and other disorders. Check your food for this harmful oil too! Companies use this ingredient as a cheap fix instead of using whole oils to create their products. Find this in foods, creams, lotions, ointments, and cosmetics.

5. PARABENS (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)

Not always labeled, used as preservatives, and contribute to hormone imbalance. Found everywhere, skincare products, makeup, containers used to hold product, moisturizers and deodorants.

HERBAL REPLENISH FACIAL TONIC

6. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

Ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products. Mostly found in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease.

7. PHTHALATES

Chemicals used to increase flexibility and strength of plastics, and not often listed among the ingredients on products. These are tricky to find because of number 11 FRAGRANCE, but they are 100% in there.

8. PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG) & BUTYLENE GLYCOL

Gaseous hydrocarbons which in a liquid state act as “surfactant”. They penetrate the skin so quickly and can weaken the protein and cellular structure. Commonly found in all products, there are natural surfactants that companies can use that don't require these ingredients.

9. SILOXANES

Look for ingredients ending in "-siloxane" or "-methicone." Used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. Endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane). Harmful to the environment including sea and wildlife.

10. SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES)

Detergent that makes products foam, lather, and bubble. Found in 90% if not all traditional care products that foam like shampoo, cleansers that don't use a foaming bottle top, detergent, etc.

WILDFIRE HYDRATE AND GLOW

11. FRAGRANCE

The word fragrance is a huge red flag. The term "fragrance" is made up of hundreds to thousands of different ingredients not listed on the label, so you are never sure what you are actually being exposed to. You can find this word in cosmetic sand skincare products, household products - candles, air fresheners, scented trash bags etc. If there is one word that you take away from Skincare Toxicity And Dangerous Ingredients To Avoid on this entire list it should be FRAGRANCE that's how bad it is.

12. TRICLOSAN

A synthetic antibacterial agent that may disrupt thyroid function and can degrade into a form of dioxin, a class of chemicals linked to a broad range of toxicities including cancer. Found in soaps, mouthwash, shaving cream, deodorants, toothpastes, etc.

It is really important to read the ingredient lists thoroughly and not skim over words, especially the ones you can’t pronounce. Skincare products should be made with pure, organic ingredients and should not contain any toxins, period. Skincare toxicity and dangerous ingredients to avoid should help shed some light on a rather grey area of the skincare industry. Keep in mind that products should not last for years if it's being made fresh. If you wouldn't eat it why would you put it on your skin. Consider your skin a second mouth and be mindful of what you feed it.
